Starting the Game
In most Texas Hold’em games, two players are responsible for posting the blinds. Sometimes, antes are used. The dealer will then shuffle the deck of 52 cards (Texas Hold’em utilizes a standard playing deck). Every player is then dealt two cards which will be face down. These are known as the pocket or hole cards.
Playing the Rounds of Poker
The first round of bets will then begin. The individual allowed to bet first, will be the person who is to the left of the two persons who made the large and small blinds. This first round is known as the pre-flop. Individuals will have the choice of calling, raising or folding. After this round has ended, the dealer will burn the top card.
He or she will then place three cards on the table face up. These three cards are known as the flop and are community cards which each player will use in combination with their own, to form the best hand they possibly can. After this, another round of betting begins. After it is over, the dealer will again burn the top card and place one more in the center of the table. This is known as the turn card.
Starting to Bet
Betting begins again and often doubles during this round. The dealer will burn the top card and place the final card on the table face up. This is known as the river. There are now 5 community cards in the middle of the table. Individuals will eventually use these five community cards along with their two hole cards to make their final hand. The last round of betting ensues. Every player who is still in the game will then show their cards. This is known as the showdown. The person who has the strongest five card hands wins.
